Jan I. Sylvis

Jan I. Sylvis was reappointed for a second term on the GASB on July 1, 2012. She began her first term on the part-time Board on July 1, 2007.

Ms. Sylvis brings extensive state government accounting and auditing experience to her Board work. Since 1995, when she was appointed chief of accounts, she has been providing the controller function for the state of Tennessee. As chief of accounts, she manages the operations of the Division of Accounts in the Department of Finance and Administration. The division maintains the state’s centralized accounting records, processes state payments and payroll, prepares the state’s financial statements, administers the Cash Management Improvement Act, and develops state accounting policy. Prior to that appointment, she served in various Tennessee state government audit roles for 16 years.

Ms. Sylvis is a past president of the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers (NASACT) and a past president of the National Association of State Comptrollers (NASC). Ms. Sylvis earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Memphis. She is a certified public accountant and a certified government financial manager.

Ms. Sylvis’ current term on the GASB concludes in 2017.
